Lefkas, or Lefkada, is an island in the Ionian Sea, connected to the west coast of Greece by a long floating bridge and causeway. The main town on the island is called Lefkada, situated up in the north, around 20 minutes drive from Aktion National Airport.
While a major part of Lefkada town was destroyed during the earthquakes of 1948 and 1950, there are still many beautiful traditional houses to be seen, including wooden houses with a covering of colored metal sheets. There are also many Lefkas villas to be found in both the city and its surrounding areas. Ancient Lefkada, located around 6 kilometers southeast of the town offers an interesting mix of historic ruins to visit, including the ruins of the ancient city of Nirikos, the first capital of the island of Lefkas back in the 2nd millennium BC. The ruins of pre-Roman theatre can be seen along with an aqueduct and the remains of an ancient cemetery.
The Lefkas cuisine can be enjoyed at many restaurants in Lefkada town and other villages on the island, offering fresh and tasty seafood recipes as well as the delicious, homemade traditional dishes of Greece, mostly using locally-grown produce.
The island’s climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild to cool winters. The warm weather starts in May, ending in October, and is perfect for spending time in villas in Lefkas, with the hottest months being July and August.
